The Shinewater Shaftesbury Centre started life in 1992 as the ‘Chat Shop’ - a place where locals and agencies could meet together for the good of the community and whenever possible help those in need. With support from the Shaftesbury Society this simple offer of help grew over the years to become an independent charity which still bears the Shaftesbury name. The Shinewater Shaftesbury Centre has been one of very few places offering face-to-face money advice, help with forms and benefit claims as well as counselling. The Centre has helped thousands of Eastbourne residence over the years creating strong links with other agencies and being respected for the work it carries out at little or no cost to its clients.
The Centre has grown a strong core of staff and volunteers who listen to their clients and ensure a warm welcome to those who cross the threshold. With the introduction of Universal Credit, the rise in Foodbank usage and a lack of timely access to counselling through the traditional mental health services the Centre became busier than ever. This work has been generously supported over the years by donations from individuals, other community charities, churches and Eastbourne Borough council.
Last year the Centre offered over 2200 appointments to 650 people and recovered £300,000 in benefit claims for our clients.
The relief to talk to someone experienced and knowlegable is priceless, this is the start of my future.(SSC Client)
